The very complementary duo of bassist Michel Donato and pianist James Gelfand collaborate on this CD to perform fresh versions of a dozen standards plus an original apiece. The music is modern mainstream and often quite boppish. Though Gelfand is mostly the lead voice, Donato also has his fair share of solo space and is significant in his accompanying of Gelfand. Among the songs transformed and uplifted are "On the Sunny Side of the Street," "Autumn Leaves," "I've Got the World on a String," "Scrapple From the Apple," and "It's Only a Paper Moon." This set and the earlier first volume serve as perfect introductions to the music of Donato and Gelfand.
