You won’t find anyone named Miike, or even Mike, in the band known as Miike Snow. What you will find is a trio of young men from Stockholm, Sweden who craft electro-laced baroque pop that sounds elegant, catchy and sophisticated. Producers Andrew Wyatt, Chris Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg comprise Miike Snow. The latter two worked with Madonna, Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue but the band’s self-titled debut sounds more closely related to Air, Vampire Weekend and Peter, Björn & John. “Animal” opens with echo-deck dub rhythms bouncing against beautifully juxtaposed synthesizer and organ while reverb-washed vocals that sound imported from late-‘90’s twee-pop bands sing harmonies on an uplifting chorus. (The song was used on a 2009 episode of Gossip Girl.) “Burial” sparkles and pops with a mellow cosmopolitan groove and joyous melodies that contrast heavy-hearted lyrics. The delightfully melodramatic “Silvia” flirts with balladry before a synthesized garden of otherworldly soundscapes unfolds like early-‘80s Erasuresque techno-pop taken to new frontiers.
