Pianist Mike Longo is still best-known for his long association with Dizzy Gillespie but he has also worked with James Moody, led quite a few recording dates of his own, and kept busy in his post-Gillespie years. Longo is heard throughout this CD in top form, mostly exploring jazz standards including "Woody 'n' You," "Tin Tin Deo," and "Limehouse Blues." His one original, "Dawn of a New Day," is a medium-tempo blues. A couple of the pieces ("Speak Low" and "Freedom Jazz Dance") are given funky rhythms but this is primarily a straight-ahead session with the pianist (who is assisted by either Paul West, Ben Brown, or John Lee on bass and Ray Mosca or Ignacio Berroa on drums) displaying his command of the bebop vocabulary. An easily enjoyable effort.
