[Edit]Long a major force in the Los Angeles studios as a pianist, arranger, composer, and producer, Mike Melvoin fortunately also finds time to play jazz and make occasional records. You Know was recorded at his home with two greats from Los Angeles: bassist Tony Dumas and drummer Ralph Penland. They explore a variety of standards, including "Blue Skies," a version of "Giant Steps" that hints in spots at "Stompin' at the Savoy," and a sly rendition of "Exactly Like You," plus five Melvoin originals. The music is straight-ahead boppish modern mainstream jazz. An excellent outing.
