[Edit]Mike Metheny began his musical career as a classical trumpeter before, at the urging of his younger brother Pat, he gradually switched to jazz. On this atmospheric set, Metheny returns to his roots. The opening version of "Chipanecas" is an excerpt featuring him at the age of 12 in 1961. The closing version of "Chipanecas" is from a different recital in the same elementary school gymnasium, 30 years later. The other selections often have Metheny joined by guitarist Rod Fleeman and occasionally keyboardist Paul Smith. Some of the renditions are acoustic while others are electronic including a version of Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 In G that has Metheny making all of the music on his electronic valve instrument. The emphasis throughout is on strong melodies including Satie's familiar First Gymnopedie and Ravel's Pavane, which in the 1930s became revised as "The Lamp Is Low." One does not have to be a connoisseur of classical music in order to enjoy this melodic and charming program. Its only fault is its brevity
