Drummer Stich Wynston (who plays piano on two numbers) leads a very flexible quartet through a set of group originals on Transparent Horizons. His drumming sometimes seems eccentric (particularly the sounds he achieves during his short solos) and the music ranges from thoughtful out-of-tempo stretches to post-bop swinging and free explorations. Tenor saxophonist Mike Murley is always an impressive player, and he is matched in the solo department by guitarist Geoff Young and Jim Vivian, who often bows his bass. This unpredictable music grows in interest with each listen and comes across as fresh and new, while still being tied to the tradition.
