The Misfits were falling apart, and punk rock was turning into hardcore punk with tempos far faster than the old school. Misfits leader Glenn Danzig attempted to keep up with the trends by speeding up the band's songs, which added rhythmic power but sacrificed much of what made the group's songs so special in the first place. ("Death Comes Ripping" retains enough melody to distinguish it.) This album was first issued as a nine-song release that clocked in at less than 15 minutes. Later, the 1984 three-song EP Die Die My Darling—with a studio version of "Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight?" (which appeared in a live version on Walk Among Us) and the hardcore "We Bite"—was added, bringing the length to 21 minutes. Metallica covered "Green Hell" in a medley with "Last Caress," and The Misfits' popularity skyrocketed. Metallica also covered "Die, Die My Darling," which is a highlight here. Nothing comes close to the craziness of The Misfits in action.
