Details
[Edit]Gainesville, Fla.-based Morningbell has been exploring a variety of sounds on each of its releases, having wandered into textures mined by Radiohead, Flaming Lips, and other bands that explore beyond the usual realms. Basso Profundo turns its ears to the group's love of soul and funk music, with the Prince-like vocal delivery on "Stick with It" giving listeners an idea of where Travis Atria is coming from. The falsetto brings a decadent sex vibe to the material, while smooth guitars, assured backing vocals, and a few tough organ riffs further turn the title track into sleek studio pop. "Rise O Lazarus (That's the Way)" imagines soul music as space music, with vocals that float into the night sky, while the instrumental backing argues over whether it should lay back or attack. "Hey Man, Hallelujah" turns up the gruffer side of soul with huskier vocals. Elements of dance music, Steely Dan, Willie Mitchell's Hi-Records, and so many others blend in unexpected ways, meaning Morningbell is near-impossible to classify or resist.
