[Edit]Austin, Texas’ country rock hopefuls Shurman teamed up with some friends and Americana dignitaries to record their very first album of twangy holiday carols. Blues Traveler’s John Popper, Brendan Hill and Paul Naffah of The Refreshments team up for an opening cover of Phil Spector’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” But instead of Spector’s Wall of Sound, the band build a wall of tube-toned guitar distortion over which Popper pulls and blows his harmonica with that instantly recognizable honk. The Mother Truckers’ Teal Collins jumps on the microphone for “It Don’t Feel Like Christmas” where her duet with singer Aaron Beavers echoes moments of Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty. Phil and Steve Hurley (from rootsy power pop band Gigolo Aunts) do an awesome job of covering The Band’s “Christmas Must Be Tonight” before bass player/songwriter Mike Therieau delivers an album standout with the hard-driving boogie-rock of “Santa Get Me Outta Here,” evoking The Faces and Exile era Stones. A heartwarming take on “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” closes featuring The Boone Elementary Holiday Choir.
