[Edit]The debut from Mulehead, Never Again is a perfect example of what the "do it yourself" attitude of the '80s and early-'90s punk and hardcore scenes could produce. Although on the surface this record would appear to be the farthest thing from punk, a closer listen leads to a different conclusion. Punk rock was always about going against the stream, and Kevin Kerby does just that with the debut release from his new band based in Little Rock, AR. After leaving a major label gig with Universal's Ho Hum, Kerby found his Texas roots with a record that is full of both attitude and vulnerability. Alternative country and Americana are the easy categories for Never Again but, underneath, the punk work ethic makes this record. Songs like "King of the Minimum Wage" and "Lord's Trusty" live up to anything cowpunks like Jason & the Scorchers or the Beat Farmers ever produced. As punk rock as the Ramones and as country as Hank Williams, Mulehead's Never Again is a big record from a small place made by artists who no longer compromise.
