As a follow up to her debut album, 2018’s The African Princess, Nandy conjures up a brief yet sonically rich EP. With bongo flava, R&B and amapiano instrumentation cocooning her smooth Swahili lyrics, the Tanzanian songstress rhythmically whets the appetite for her sophomore. “This EP has different sounds, rhythms and feelings. It’s a cocktail of variety,” she tells Apple Music. “When I first started out I was making Baibuda, but I've since grown into other music. I just went with what I felt, so these songs have different sounds from different places. I also have a huge album coming up and that's why I called this Taste.” Nandy talks us through the eclectic EP below.
Yudah “‘Yudah’ is a love song telling the story of a girl who just got a new boyfriend. She's just telling her friends and family, ‘I have this person I love and I feel sorry for his exes: he loves, listens to and takes care of me and even took me to his parents’. I called it ‘Yudah’ because we’re talking about time—the love is there and people find their partners everyday. I want people to feel the music; this song is all about love and I'm singing it for them.”
Nimekuzoea “This reminded me of Brenda Fassie, so my producer, Kimambo Beats, and I put a sprinkle of amapiano here. This is a love song, meaning ‘I've just gotten used to you’. It's about a couple that has a strong bond and do everything together. It's for the people who are just so in love.”
New Couple “This is a little bit cheeky. In our country, with artists especially, there's this behaviour where everyday people say there's a new couple around. Today you're dating this one and after two months you're dating another one! The song just names the biggest artists in Tanzania who are rumoured to be dating—the next thing, they’re breaking up and I’m like ‘What happened?’”
Yote Sawa “This is a song about hurting. It's about a girl who's brokenhearted. She's with a man who doesn't care about her and everything she does. ‘Yote Sawa’ means 'Everything is okay–you can hurt me, leave me or do whatever you want to do and I'll be fine’.”
