Details
[Edit]Five years after her Daptone Records debut, septuagenarian gospel singer Naomi Shelton followed up with Cool World, again mixing raw gospel with the kind of vintage '60s-style soul grooves Daptone does so well. But there's a bit more musical variation here. "Movin'" rolls gleefully along with a sort of Sam Cooke stroll; "Bound for the Promised Land" bears the kind of syncopated funk feel found on Honey Cone's 1971 smash "Want Ads"; "I Don't Know" is a simmering pot of soul not far removed from the vibe of a classic Sam & Dave ballad. But all these soulful sounds are set in a spiritual context when Shelton starts testifying in her charismatic, commanding way.
