Distant Pulses

Distant Pulses is the second release from electro artists Negative Format. This release marks an evolution for the group, moving into a sound that has a distinctive minimalist character. Competing tones and synth voices are used to good effect on Distant Pulses, delicate electro melodies at times reminiscent (though not too similar to) Haujobb's famous Solutions for a Small Planet, with a sterile twist. The vocals also have a light role in this release, used sparingly, and mixed in low so they don't take over the melody. Driven by a mix of breakbeats and lighter dance beats, Distant Pulses has a complexity which will demand repeated listens from those that initially take to it. However, for some electro fans looking for a harder edge, this release may not take, given how similar in parts it can sound to trance techno. This is especially true in the epic melodies, such as "Stargazer," which runs on for almost ten minutes. Some tracks also use voices not conventionally found in this style of music, such as pianos, which may make it less accessible for listeners coming from a harder electro background. Overall, the album is subtle and complex, grows with repeated listening, and is well worth the attention. Look out for the secret tenth track.
