Record label chief David Geffen tried to sue Neil Young for making albums unrepresentative of the Neil Young sound for his Geffen Records throughout the ‘80s. Back with Reprise Records, which released Young's "representative" '70s work, Young issued Freedom in 1989, an album assembled from tapes of the various different projects he'd been spending the past several years working on. Put together it immediately coheres as gentle and ferocious, and of a piece with Young masterworks Tonight's the Night andRust Never Sleeps. Freedom contains everything Neil Young fans have ever expected from the man, from pointed contemporary commentary delivered in acoustic and electric forms bookending the album ("Rockin' In the Free World"), gentle, heartfelt acoustic ballads ("Hangin' On a Limb," "Too Far Gone") and explosive electric workouts ("Eldorado," "On Broadway"). It was his best album in a decade and signaled an upcoming renaissance for both his public profile and his creative muse as the grunge era was about to begin and its godfather would be properly anointed.
