Kurt Cobain quoted Young in his suicide note, and "The Godfather of Grunge" took the singer's death to heart. Cobain's ghost haunts Sleeps with Angels, and several songs are informed meditations on his lost soul. The title track, "My Heart," and "A Dream That Can Last" play as cautionary tales to anyone who takes Young's sometimes-fatalistic lyrics too literally. Just as Tonight's the Night expressed the hangover of guitarist Danny Whitten's overdose, Sleeps with Angels marries itself to the moment when grunge turned dark. Young's best tributes are when he blows the doors off and lets the electricity flow. "Change Your Mind" is a nearly 15-minute monster, complete with a tumultuous firestorm from Crazy Horse. "Western Hero" highlights the beautiful frailty in Young's voice with a tale that excites his boyhood dreams. "Safeway Cart" cruises with a ticking-timebomb rhythm. "Piece of Crap" is a rambunctious jam-out spiked with frustration at the quality of goods. The album is a highlight in Young's catalog and part of a renaissance that Young seems to experience every decade or so.
