The self-titled New Invisible Joy EP came nearly two years after the band's debut, Pale Blue Day. Also known as the "Silver Album" due to its elaborate pill-case packaging, it was a limited-edition release designed primarily as a thank you to fans and a calling card for labels and people in the music business. The band's sound is larger in every way here, John Schisler's vocals approaching arena rock elevation. But the added power in Ed Tuton's thick production takes away from the intricacies of Mike Gaydos' Edge-inspired guitar work and the impact of Schisler's evocative lyrics. "Wasted" is a solid, standout track, "Alone" received a smattering of radio airplay in their native Pittsburgh, and the rest of the EP isn't bad at all, but the bandmembers nevertheless distanced themselves from it, criticizing it in local interviews. New Invisible Joy isn't the band's best work, but far from a disappointment, it's a worthwhile listen for fans of U2-influenced indie modern rock.
