[Edit]Between Wine & Blood is technically a six-song mini-LP of new songs and an 11-track live album recorded during the band’s 2013 Between Dog and Wolf tour of London, Nottingham, Cologne, Cambridge, and Amsterdam. After drummer Michael Dean was diagnosed with blood clots in his leg and advised to curtail touring until sufficiently healed, the band postponed their spring 2014 tour and used the time to go back into the studio with producer Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Tool) and work up new material. Just as the previous album presented NMA working at top form, so does this ensuing collection. The six new tracks are as great and as passionate as their previous work, with the songs ranging from the full-on aggression of “Angry Planet” to the subtler textures of the melodic anthem “Sunrise.” The live recordings further prove how 34 years of performing have made Justin Sullivan an expert leader and a first-rate vocalist with the catalog to match.
