Originally introduced as the second movement to his String Quartet op. 11, Barber’s cathartic “Adagio” took on a life of its own when he arranged it for a larger string ensemble and the New York Philharmonic took it on an international tour. A generation later, Leonard Bernstein offered this impassioned reading of the piece with the same orchestra. The heart-wrenching composition is a powerful counterpoint alongside two works by Copland: the pastoral Appalachian Spring and rollicking ballet, Rodeo. By showcasing one of America’s premiere conductors with two of her most distinguished composers, this is a single-volume introduction to American contributions to the classical canon.
