Even by his own standards, Nick Curran gets seriously crazed on 2010’s Reform School Girl. What gives Curran his edge over his roots-rocking peers is his unhinged attitude, manifested in his Little Richard-style vocalizing and blazing instrumental work. This time out, he delivers a pack of tunes overflowing with sex, sweat and danger, avoiding any concessions to studio niceties or contemporary tastes. Songs like “Tough Lover,” “Psycho,” “Baby You Crazy” and “Lusty Lil’ Lucy” are ferocious, gonad-fueled fun, howled out over clattering piano and hopped-up drums. The mood cools off slightly for the sultry “Sheena’s Back” and the tormented, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins-inspired “Dream Girl.” Phil Alvin of the Blasters stops by for a duet on the thoughtful “Flyin’ Blind.” Throughout the album, Nick’s punctuates his tunes with the sort of lethal guitar solos that won him a recent stint with the Fabulous Thunderbirds. A treat for any fan of hot, primal rock, Reform School Girl pumps new blood into old musical forms thanks to Curran’s impeccable chops, no-frills songwriting and maniacal energy.
