Details
[Edit]The received wisdom is that few people bought this album when it came out in 1967, but everyone who did started a band. Its influential mix of unbridled hedonism and sonic experimentation was clearly too heavy, strange, and ahead of its time for the flower-power era. The striking thing is how this uncompromising set hasn't lost any of its power with the passage of time. Songs like the droney, creepy fantasy "Venus in Furs" and the cathartic proto-punk "European Son" will send goosebumps down your spine, as will the slow-building, awe-inspiring "Heroin." Lou Reed could also write dreamy, sugary-sweet pop to provide brilliant contrast to the more experimental tracks: see "I'll Be Your Mirror" (sung by Nico) and "Sunday Morning."
