Make no mistake about it: Nils Wogram is one of the most technically advanced trombonists of any genre. When he lets loose, as he does here on occasion, his superhuman abilities are something to marvel at, as the trombonist lashes out with a speed and facility rarely seen on the instrument. Those who enjoy the sounds of the jazz trombone will particularly appreciate Wogram's abilities, which are on full display here. He also has the ability to perform in a variety of styles. Unlike his best work on the CIMP label, where he recorded in tandem with fellow trombonist Konrad Bauer in some stunning avant-garde jazz settings, the instant recording with Wogram's group, Root 70, is less adventurous and somewhat less satisfying, though it is filled with extraordinary soloing by the trombonist. If nothing more, it highlights the trombonist's superior credentials as a post-bopper. His writing is not as impressive as his improvising (how could it be?), but his sidemen are all solid in support, with saxophonist Hayden Chisholm a fine and more than competent, if not spectacular, foil and an excellent arranger. Some of the tunes, such as Wogram's meandering "Sushi High," fall a bit flat, but the individual performances compensate amply. Even with its flaws, this is a powerful release, and it offers more than its share of rewarding moments.
