Details
[Edit]For their second album, Wisconsin-based traditional bluegrass group the Nob Hill Boys added fiddler Paul Kienitz, increasing their ranks to five (not including, of course, a drummer) and adding a welcome new instrumental texture to their already entertaining sound. The group is at its best on instrumental tracks like the Kenny Baker-penned fiddle showcase "Bluegrass in the Backwoods," because traditional bluegrass and country tunes like Del McCoury's "This Kind of Life" and Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" unfortunately show off the group's weakest asset: lead singer Lonnie Meeker has a sort of flat, characterless voice that lacks the strong personality of the great bluegrass singers from Ralph Stanley to Alison Krauss. Instrumentally, the Nob Hill Boys are hard to top among present-day purveyors of traditional bluegrass, but their vocals often leave something to be desired.
