Details
[Edit]As bands like Blur and Pulp were spreading the gospel of Britpop with quirky nods to Madchester and songs critiquing British culture, Oasis stormed the airwaves with a swaggering jangle-rock sound, declaring themselves "Rock n Roll" stars on the very first track of their debut, Definitely Maybe. This attitude, combined with Noel Gallagher's McCartney-esque ear for hooks, resulted in one of the most captivating groups of the '90s. To mark this set's 20th anniversary, this deluxe edition is remastered and bundled with two additional albums' worth of odds and ends. Highlights include Oasis' inevitable "I Am the Walrus" cover, the impossibly lo-fi cassette demo of "Strange Thing," and two of the band's best songs, let alone b-sides: Noel's tender ballad "Half the World Away" and "Whatever," a gigantic anthem complete with a string section that somehow never found its way onto a proper studio album. That this comp closes with a strings-only version of the song gives you an idea of how special it is.
