Details
[Edit]Anyone who misses the continental drift of Aaron Turner’s longtime band Isis—which split up in 2010 after nearly 15 years together—should take comfort in the long-dormant arms of Old Man Gloom. An underground metal supergroup featuring Turner and members of Converge (Nate Newton), Cave In (Caleb Scofield), and Zozobra (Santos Montano), Old Man Gloom is truly the sum of all its tortured parts, elevating the extremities of everyone’s better-known bands by bringing in more experimental elements. “Rats” is one example, segueing from three minutes of feedback-flecked, monastic chants to a guttural death march and waves of riffs that have been raked over a pile of still-burning coals. Meanwhile, “Shuddering Earth” is 14 minutes of multi-movement madness, switching gears from a spare and moody ambient piece to what sounds like a street full of downed power lines. It’s not the most soothing listen, but that’s most certainly the point.
