[Edit]All of the music on this double-LP (released in 1978 as part of ABC/Impulse's Dedication Series) has since been reissued on CD. The first album is the classic Oliver Nelson date Blues and the Abstract Truth. Featured are Nelson (on tenor and alto), altoist/flutist Eric Dolphy, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and pianist Bill Evans in a septet set highlighted by the famous version of "Stolen Moments," "Hoe-Down" and "Yearnin '." The second half of the two-fer is unusual for it features Nelson on soprano (which he rarely played) for five selections with a quartet that includes pianist Steve Kuhn, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Grady Tate. At the time two of the performances ("Straight No Chaser" and "Example 78") had never been out before although all of the selections have since been collected on an Impulse CD. Essential music in one form or another.
