Details
[Edit]The master of wicked mixes and originator of "hard hop" is as good as ever. Serving up a collection of the best that the acid breaks subgenre has to offer, Omar Santana (or perhaps that's Mr. Santana to you) keeps the energy up from start to finish on this best-of collection. The CD features tracks by Hard Hop Heathen, Tales From the Hardside, and Wizard of Oh. Wizard of Oh is actually an alias for Santana himself; the other production credits might well belong to him. Santana is known to operate under a number of different stage names and to wear a number of different hats (producer, remixer, DJ, etc.). This album is hard-rockin', dark, and driving — or is that driven? Though it's not as angry as some of Santana's later albums, it definitely is a postcard from the dark side of breakbeats. Nary a hint of 2-step or house can be found. Most of the vocal samples are recurring, which sort of makes the entire album feel like one very long (approximately 60-minute) track interspersed with several very short breakdowns. ~ L. Katz, Rovi
