Ozone Player's Videozone opens with a piece that is strikingly reminiscent of Angelo Badalamenti's work on the Twin Peaks soundtrack. With a total of 29 tracks, Videozone is truly evocative and sounds a lot like the soundtrack to a 1980s after-school special, as it paints pictures of neighborhood streets and sunny neighborhoods with the foreshadowing of some tragic event to come, but through it all there are brief, peaceful, almost jovial interludes that seem to ebb and flow and rise and fall. Videozone is a very fun record; everything about it has an air of fun or anticipatory excitement. This record is actually quite an achievement, almost as though it's the perfect marriage of fun and electronics; in some places it's a lot like an instrumental Kraftwerk, or a combination of Kraftwerk and Phish. Most of the tracks on this recording are quite short and, while most of the recording is produced with electronics, there seems to be a wide, cross-genre influence with Videozone. Ozone Player has created a masterful work that truly goes the distance. If you're looking for a unique and whole recording, then certainly this recording is the one. Also, Videozone is quite different in some ways from Ozone Player's previous outing, Insane Logic, but both of them are quite nice.
