[Edit]Spirit Lines, a fascinating debut album from the Boston duo Pale Hands, introduces the take-no-prisoners vision of Jen Johnson, who provides first-person accounts of punk-like self-identity alongside surprisingly smooth and beautiful synths and beats reminiscent of Cocteau Twins. Her husband and musical partner, Mike Latulippe, keeps the balancing act together. Johnson, however, sounds primed for confrontation. “I’m immune to debasement and I won’t run away” she states on the seductive “Under Over.” It’s honest writing like this that guides the album, making personal anthems of “Juventud” and “Seismic” that can be felt (and used) by other suffering misfits.
