In the 1970s and 1980s, Amigo made an excellent series of recordings by traditional Indian musicians, and in 1999, the Stockholm-based label reissued some of them on CD for the first time. One was by the late sitar virtuoso Pandit Nikhil Banerjee. Recorded live in Stockholm in 1975 (when Banerjee was 44), this album was titled Raga Piloo during its years as a vinyl LP but was simply titled Pandit Nikhil Banerjee when it became a CD in 1999. The album consists solely of the extended instrumental raga titled "Raga Piloo," which unites Banerjee's sitar with the tabla drums of Anindo Chaterjee and the tamboura of Ratan Mukherjee. Banerjee had studied traditional Northern Indian music with sarod player Ustad Alauddin Khan, who also taught the great sitarist Ravi Shankar — so it isn't surprising that Banerjee shows such a strong command of his instrument during this performance. Banerjee should have lived to an old age, but sadly, he died in 1986 (11 years after this recording was made) at the age of 55.
