In 1997, Philippine rock band Parokya Ni Edgar (Parish of Edgar) released its second album, BURUGUDUYSTUNSTUGUDUNSTUY. The band's first album, released in 1996, was very popular and contained many funny skits and songs, and also included some serious music. Despite the second album's nonsensical title, this time Parokya Ni Edgar cuts down on the jokes and comes across with more meaningful music. The band sounds quite confident here, as though flush with the success of the first album. The songwriting has also improved. In the first album, several songs "borrowed" the melodies of several popular international songs, over which the band sang new lyrics. This time the band writes all its own material, spearheaded by the composing talents of vocalist Chito Miranda. There are still comedic skits that link some songs together, but the number is greatly reduced. The band is more serious about its music, and explores several styles. "High" features a fast, punkish rhythm, while "OKATOKAT" (backwards spelling of Takotako, which means "I'm Scared") has a snarling, industrial metal feel to it. The band also performs several acoustic songs, as heard in "Sampip," which has a tender, poignant quality to it. "Please Don't Touch My Birdie," however, retains the comedy and works off a double entendre ("birdie" is Filipino slang for the male g******s). The album was very popular and sold well.
