Details
[Edit]This intriguing set is led by bassist Patrik Boman and features a four-horn septet that is sometimes reminiscent of Charles Mingus' groups. The music, all Boman originals (which he arranged), sometimes looks backwards (particularly in the playing of trumpeter Magnus Broo), but at other times is quite modern. The songs are haunting even though none of the melodies are ultimately that memorable. Per "Texas" Johansson's spot on contra bass clarinet on the opening "Dog Breath" sticks in one's mind, as does the overall spirit of the generally fascinating ensemble. All of these European musicians (who are quite obscure in the United States) deserve to be known.
