Director Paul W.S Anderson (Resident Evil, Death Race) was wise to snag composer Paul Haslinger for his explosive, popcorn-hurling take on Alexandre Dumas' Three Musketeers, as the ex-Tangerine Dream member seems more than up to the task of keeping up with his partner in crime's kinetic pace. Similar in style to Hanz Zimmer's playful and boisterous work on Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes reboot, Haslinger trades the regality and pomp of the past, in this case, 17th century France, for the propulsive cacophony of a Michael Bay film, blending explosive, electro-percussion and classical action cues with comical harpsichord runs, resulting in a listening experience that works wonderfully when taken in short bursts, and with more than a few grains of salt.
