[Edit]Overseen by longtime producer Brendan O'Brien (whose recent credits also include Bruce Springsteen, My Chemical Romance, and The Fray), Lightning Bolt leaves no question about Pearl Jam's enduring vitality. Opening with the one-two punch of “Getaway” and “Mind Your Manners,” the 10th studio album from the ’90s rock architects alternates between thrashing rock and soaring ballads. And though there are relatively sedate interludes and moments of experimentation—like the reverb-washed desolation of “Pendulum”—tunes like “Lightning Bolt” and “My Father’s Son” channel the howling energy of The Stooges. Fans of Vedder’s solo album Ukulele Songs will also recognize “Sleeping By Myself,” filled out here by the full band with a swaying Americana feel.
