Although his tongue-in-cheek hit recording of "Twelfth Street Rag" took place back in 1948, trombonist Pee Wee Hunt was able to use that success to lead at least seven Dixieland-oriented LPs for Capitol from 1956-62, none of which have ever been reissued on CD. Unfortunately, the personnel is not known on this three-horn, four-rhythm septet date, although the clarinetist might be Rosy McHargue. Hunt performs a dozen Dixieland and 1920s standards, ranging from warhorses such as "Muskrat Ramble," "Tin Roof Blues" and "Panama" to a few vintage numbers not played all that often, including "Stomp Off, Let's Go," "Boneyard Shuffle" and "Red Hot Mama." A highlight is a rendition of the Original Dixieland Band's "Livery Stable Blues" which finds the horns coming up with their own fresh interpretations of the "animal sounds" that originally made the song a hit. One of Pee Wee Hunt's better Dixieland records.
