[Edit]The female-fronted U.K punk band Penetration made some great singles and two worthy albums on EMI in the late '70s. This BBC radio set collects well-recorded live versions of some of the band’s best, including “Lovers of Outrage,” “Don’t Dictate,” and “On Reflection.” The guitar interplay on “She Is the Slave” features borderline discordance and so much power that it sounds like a mix of Television and The Stooges. Their cover of The Buzzcocks' “Nostalgia” is as raw-boned and poppy as anything else of the era, but while Pauline Murray’s expressive voice never cops Pete Shelley’s vocal tics (she makes the song her own), the version here nearly betters The Buzzcocks' original. “Stone Heroes” should’ve gone down as a punk classic (especially if interpreted as a dis toward the aging prog-rock stars of the early '70s); this live version is a wily mix of raga rage and heavy metal thunder. This collection shows Murray and band keeping all the fury and innocence of U.K punk rock intact without the macho posturing.
