This impressive debut by introspective singer/songwriter Pete Krebs is a fine synthesis of traditional and contemporary elements. From the Elliott Smith-like arrangements of "D Tune Drop" and "Mean Time" to more strongly country-flavored tunes like the plucked banjo of "Spider in My Gin" and the folksy "Truman," most of the songs find Krebs pulling on the punk-rock intensity of his former band Hazel, while presenting modern-rock elements in a completely acoustic setting. Though not as overtly roots-rock-oriented as Jeff Tweedy's Wilco, Krebs possesses a singing voice much like that of the alternative country icon's, and he seems to have a similar knack for crafting plaintive, mournful ballads as well. Though not as melodically complex as the aforementioned Elliott Smith, Krebs mines much of the same lyrical territory, mostly centering on themes of lost love and personal angst. At any rate, he's a fine lyricist. Overall, a very even and consistent debut.
