[Edit]Pete Petersen's Collection Jazz Orchestra, based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, proves on this CD that it is a highly professional stage band that is creative within the boundaries of mainstream jazz. Its release could have been recorded in the early 1960's for there are no hints of the innovations of the avant-garde or any influences from fusion or funk. What is here is a well-rehearsed and swinging 19-piece orchestra that plays a variety of colorful charts, with all of the songs except "G'Day Mates" being standards. The influence of Count Basie is felt (two of the charts are Sammy Nestico's) even if the band is not strictly imitative of anyone. The soloists (all local players) are fine but it is the solid ensembles and high-quality musicianship that make Pete Petersen's orchestra a group worth hearing.
