[Edit]Pete Zimmer leads a quintet (with Toru Dado and Rick Germanson taking turns on piano) through a conventional but well-played modern hard bop/post-bop set. All of the songs are originals except a feature for the trio on "Darn That Dream," with six (including two versions of "Common Man") being by Zimmer. Some of the tunes are based on familiar chord changes, but most are more original. Each of the musicians has his chances to solo, with the hard-swinging tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm usually taking solo honors. This set is a fine example of modern mainstream jazz of the early 21st century, not pushing the boundaries but played with spirit within the older structures.
