As Higher Octave Music's first artist in 1986, Peter Davison holds the distinction of being somewhat of a new age music pioneer. His latest disc, Focal Point, is more of a fusion extravaganza, using spiritual motifs as a launching pad for environmental and worldly ideas, much like Spencer Brewer. Davison's background as a film composer is evident as he surrounds his melodies with orchestral flair, but it's his effective use of other synth sounds — from sitar and steel pans to overall soundscaping — which make this a journey to remember. While he uses Peter Kent's violin to stirring effect, it's Davison's own multi-instrumental approach which allows him to weave diverse elements so effectively. If he's not imitating the "Song of Dolphins" with his flute and penny whistle, he's introducing a jazzy texture with soprano sax. Lush releases like this help redefine the term "new age" for those who still think it's just elevator music.
