[Edit]Phil Collins spent the '80s creating an unbroken string of mega-successful albums with producer Hugh Padgham and a core group of studio musicians. By 1993’s Both Sides, he was ready for a change. Though Collins had played a commanding role in all of his solo albums, this was the first occasion on which he did absolutely everything by himself: all the singing, all the production, and all the instrumentation. In that way, Both Sides resembles Collins’ first solo effort, Face Value. “Can’t Turn Back the Years,” “Can’t Find My Way," and “We Fly So Close” echo that album’s somber musical motifs and lyrical themes. These songs feel truer to Collins’ character than something like “Sussudio.” After all, he'd come out of the tradition of Brian Eno, finding moods, melodies, and textural sounds propelled by the slightest of ticks. “I’ve Forgotten Everything” and “Please Come Out Tonight” are the most exposed songs Collins ever recorded, while “We Wait and We Wonder”—with its quiet anti-terrorism message—has only gained significance in the intervening years.
