Phish's penchant for intense, extended instrumental jamming earned them many a comparison with the Grateful Dead, and a loyal cult following whose fervor nearly matched that of Deadheads. Like the Dead, Phish's studio output sometimes seemed to suffer by comparison with their live passions. Recorded in a remote corner of upstate New York, this double-album ably captures the band's virtual intoxication with performance, becoming an energetic celebration of Phish's first decade and the jam-happy ethos that made them stars. The workouts "You Enjoy Myself" and "Tweezer" alone comprise nearly an hour's fevered interplay. But there are also many examples of how confidently Phish could focus their performances, while still allowing some impressive genre-hopping, from the propulsive opener "Bouncing Around the Room" and jazzy "Montana" to the standouts "Harry Hood" and "Squirming Coil."
