After Clive Davis bought out Buddah Records, Phyllis Hyman was moved to the Arista label, where she recorded 1979’s Somewhere in My Lifetime. As a strong and idealistic artist, Hyman often clashed with the famously controlling Davis, but their disputes over the album's creative direction resulted in some dazzling music. David brought in Barry Manilow to produce “Somewhere in My Lifetime,” a slow-burning pop ballad that could have been innocuous if left to another singer. Hyman gave it depth and purpose. Her vocal prowess was matched by a rare integrity, giving all of her songs an air of authenticity, regardless of the material. Her sweet spot was the unique blend of jazz, R&B, and disco heard on “Living Inside Your Love,” “Kiss You All Over,” and “So Strange,” the latter two of which are presented here in extended 12-inch versions, both spectacular. As a ballad singer, Hyman’s vocals were rich beyond words. Whether on the sensual R&B of “The Answer Is You” or the classic torch song “Here’s That Rainy Day,” she made sure that listeners felt every inch of every note.
