On Genuine American Monster, Raymond Watts pairs classic KMFDM industrial grit and angst with interesting samples and slippery beats. "Riot Religion & Righteousness" is as propulsive and danceable as KMFDM circa Money. "Salambo" entirely confounds listeners' expectations for Pig with an upbeat Brazilian rhythm that dances beneath Watts' demon vocals as the song mutates into distorted industrial mariachi. It's probably one of the most unlikely tracks to ever grace the genre. "Flesh Fest" is ludicrously catchy for industrial and "Black Brothel" employs smooth synthesizers to create a subtle floating world of sound that could easily fit in a David Lynch film (along with the 14-minute-long "Iaside"). "Cry Baby" could even be Moby's dark side. But despite all of the invention and innovation, it is unlikely that Genuine American Monster will appeal to anyone who is not a fan of the industrial genre. Still, those who have stuck by industrial music will find Genuine American Monster to be an eclectic mix of successful digressions from the usual form.
