When a band is discovered and introduced to the world by Tim DeLaughter of the wildly creative Polyphonic Spree, chances are the group is going to be interesting as well. And that's definitely the case with Texas-based Pilotdrift. In fact, with a record that shifts from prog rock to lounge to chamber rock, Pilotdrift are so eclectic that it's nearly impossible to pinpoint exactly where they fit before simply settling with art rock. "Caught in My Trap" begins Water Sphere with fantasy-laden prog rock before "Bubblecraft" slips into a lounge-based experiment. The curious "Late Night in a Wax Museum" breaks into a weird instrumental jam with horns and xylophone in the middle, while the ten-minute "Jekyll and Hyde Suite" is more a soundtrack to a Tim Burton film than a rock song. At that point the band really gets bizarre and too self-absorbed. Whether or not Pilotdrift know where they're trying to go, this is one of the most daring records of 2005, even if it's a bit much to handle.
