The pride of Fresno, Calif., Planet Asia is an indie-rap mainstay who's been steadily putting in work since the late '90s. He's overcome industry drama (he was once signed to Interscope), earned a Grammy nomination, been a member of several groups (including Skhool Yard, Cali Agents, and General Monks), and dropped well-received collabo albums with underground icons DJ Muggs, Madlib, and Evidence. Originally released as a mixtape in 2007, Planet F.L.O. finds him working with F.L.O., an under-the-radar San Francisco emcee who sounds strikingly similar to Sir Mix-a-Lot. The lead single "Dem Boyz Go" finds them embracing the Hyphy style of the moment, while the paper anthem "Take Money" rides a moody piano beat and huge drums. The production here (from My M.O.) is kind of all over the place stylistically, sounding occasionally inspired ("Call Waiting") but also lapsing into played-out synth minimalism ("Any and Everything," "Mikilikihi"). Cali-based guests include Killa Tay, J. Jones, C-Dot, and Do Dirty.
