Details
[Edit]Carrying the endorsement of Third Man Records, the St. Louis–based Americana musician Pokey LaFarge will soon likely meet with larger audiences. They're sure to be mesmerized by his exquisite re-creation of music that most of us have only heard on scratchy old 78s. Producer Ketch Secor—frontman of The Old Crow Medicine Show—captures a perfect balance between modern and retro, letting the sound be as clean and clear as necessary without losing the special spark that these instruments create when played together. LaFarge mixes early jazz and western swing, with fiddles, lap steel, cornet, and clarinet joining vintage guitars and LaFarge's authentic voice. He gives the impression that there was no such thing as air conditioning when he was singing "City Summer Blues." Unlike the dark and dirty delta blues, "The Devil Ain't Lazy" courts a far more lighthearted repartee, while "Bowlegged Woman" is similarly jocular. "Home Away from Home" pines for Louisville, Ky., more than few decades ago. Welcome to the glorious past!
