[Edit]Not only do Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn make great, authentic music (with real instruments) and craft insanely perfect pop songs, but they play—with enormous success—by their own rules. Their skill at picking the right cover songs (by the likes of Beyoncé, Lorde, The Beatles) and reworking them into Pomplamoose treasures pretty much paid for a rural Northern California property where they work and live, letting the couple focus on music 24/7. Building their “video song” catalog on YouTube and in MP3s only (no vinyl, no CDs), turning down a major-label offer, and evidently having great fun with their creative process, the duo comfortably ping back and forth between original and cover material. Season 2 includes both, with the duo’s irrepressible joi de vivre rendering their cartwheeling guitars and effervescent pianos in the brightest rainbow hues. They open with the classic ode to pop video “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Two originals—“Come Out to Play” (a bubbly electro-pop tune) and “Get That Body Back” (a panting, aerobic-boosting number that owes its soul to techno)—are killer.
