Encouraged after meeting pianist Michel Camilo, Danish pianist Poul Reimann came to New York to make his recording debut as a leader. His rhythm section includes bassist James Genus and either Ignacio Berroa or Claes Brondal on drums, while saxophonists David Sanchez and Benjamin Koppel, plus trumpeter Randy Brecker, guest on a few tracks. For someone of a tender age (23) at the time of the recording, Reimann demonstrates well-developed chops while resisting the temptation to overplay his hand. He generously features his guests on the non-trio tracks. Brecker's rapid-fire flügelhorn is the centerpiece of the intense blues "Rush Hour." Koppel plays soprano in the wistful ballad "Home" and the driving Cuban-flavored "Gettin' Over It" (the latter an engaging duet). Sanchez's potent tenor is showcased in the soul-jazz-flavored "Groovy Hands." The talented Poul Reimann is already overdue for a follow-up CD.
