Prog Is Not a Four Letter Word is an excellent compilation for prog newbies and ardent fans, spanning nine years (1969-1978) of staples and obscurities. It opens with the Italian quintet Picchio dal Pozzo’s “Merta,” which sets the tone with plenty of analog synthesizers droning and warbling over whimsical glockenspiel, and nonlyrical falsetto harmonies chirping in. Then Visitors unleash some percussive prog of the French variety, infusing their instrumental with free jazz elements. San Ui Lim’s “Frustration” must have seemed like futuristic innovation when the Korean artist released it in 1977, but today it’s a wonderfully kitschy (and catchy) jam with cheesy keyboards and mellow rock drumming. Conversely, Baris Manco’s “Lambaya Puf De” is a 1971 jam steeped in traditional Turkish tones that contrast tastefully with wah-wah guitar.
