Recorded during the off hours at a Tennessee suicide prevention center, Kludge is as greasy and messy as any fine lo-fi collection. Whether Nashville indie rocker Daniel Pujol is turning up the volume for the dense, angry pop of “Post Grad” or enjoying a moment of semi-clarity on the acoustic “Dark Haired Suitor,” he comes across as a songwriter who does his best work when expressing himself unfiltered. Pujol and producer Doni Shroader pile a number of strange noises and unusual instrumental tones onto the songs, while Pujol varies his attack regardless of how eclectic the results are. “Sacred Harp BFK” takes a droning keyboard and matches it with tweaked-out vocals that sound like Beck working over his Prince impersonation with the world’s most primitive technology. “Manufactured Crisis Control” turns up the tempo for a power pop number performed at hardcore speeds. “Circles” keeps the power pop to a manageable speed. Overall, it’s the sound of chaos being tamed into song.
